Experience a real, working animal welfare and management program

Who should apply?

Wildlife lovers who want a "hands-on" internship in African wildlife and conservation. Anyone who is considering a career in veterinary science, animal welfare and animal management.


2 -16 weeks


Interns will work over several conservation areas in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Activities are based in three areas of demand:

AFRICAN WILDLIFE Spend time in commercial and non-commercial game reserves studying and working with African wildlife
Gain hands-on experience with a range of livestock
DOMESTIC ANIMALS Work with a range of domestic animals in rural villages and township settlements where many of the domestic animals are classed as vulnerable and abused

Pre-Vet Students Volunteer in South Africa

December saw the arrival of two groups of Pre-Vet volunteers. Based in an Eastern Cape Game Reserve, the Pre-Vet volunteer teams spent 2 weeks working with the local wildlife including rhino, nyala, impala, giraffe and countless bird and small mammal species as well as taking part in lectures and hands on conservation management tasks. They also had hands on experience with agricultural livestock and vulnerable domestic animals in local farms and townships. Read more >

Volunteers are based in shared accommodation in a serviced and catered house just minutes walk from Chintsa beach.


- Shared accommodation
- Communal kitchen & living area
- Electricity
- Hot & cold running water
- Bath & shower room facilities
- All bedding and linen included
- Washing machine available for volunteer use

Due to the nature of the Pre-Vet Experience interns work between various reserves, farms and rural villages and are mobilized to where the work is. Program accommodation reacts to this need and interns can expect to stay in a variety of accommodation in the wider Chintsa area. This accommodation will always be comfortable and safe and could include work based tented camps, bush cottages, farm houses and ocassionally lodges.
